Tao Ta is located on both sides of the entrance to Yongquan Temple in Fuzhou. This pair of ceramic Thousand Buddha Pagodas, standing at 6.83 meters tall, were relocated from Longrui Temple in the southern suburbs of Fuzhou in 1972 and serve as the temple’s treasure. Constructed in the fifth year of the Yuanfeng era (1082) during the Song Dynasty, the pagodas were made by firing clay in layers and then assembling them.
Such pagodas, made from fired clay, are very rare in China. The eastern pagoda is called ‘Dignified Kalpa Thousand Buddha Pagoda,’ and the western one is known as ‘Wise Kalpa Thousand Buddha Pagoda.’ Both pagodas have the same design, featuring an octagonal structure with nine levels. Each pagoda wall is adorned with 1078 sculpted Buddha statues, and the octagonal eaves have 72 statues of the Four Buddhas, along with 72 ceramic tower bells. The stone-built base of the pagoda is engraved with Vajra warriors, lotus petals, dancing lions, and inscriptions that record the construction time, donors, and the names of the craftsmen who built the pagodas. The pagodas are open to visitors from 07:00 to 17:30 all year round.Tao Ta at Yongquan Temple, Fuzhou
