Shengshan Temple, originally known as Shengshan Lingyan Temple, is located at the southern foot of Changji Mountain in Xin Dian Town, Chixing Village, Jin’an District, Fuzhou City. The temple was first established during the Chen Tianjia three years of the Southern and Northern Dynasties (AD 562), just after Kaiyuan Temple in Fuzhou (Liang Taiqing three years of the Southern Dynasties, AD 549). The temple occupies an area of fifteen acres.

During the Tang Dynasty, eminent monks gathered here to discuss scriptures, and the site includes the remains of Yuansha Temple. At its peak during the Tang and Song dynasties, the temple was home to a thousand monks and nuns. Renowned historical figures such as Zhou Pu from the Tang Dynasty, Zeng Gao, Chen Xiang, and Li Gang from the Song Dynasty, Chen Liang from the Ming Dynasty, and Lin Zexu from the Qing Dynasty have all visited this temple.

Today, the temple complex includes the Mahavira Hall, the Great Compassion Pavilion, the Western Return Ancestral Hall, Amitabha Hall, monks’ quarters, and a stone trough from the Song Dynasty, along with ancient monks’ pagodas. The temple is open to visitors all year round from 06:00 to 16:30.
