The Relic Pagoda of Dipamkara Buddha is located at the northern end of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in Tongzhou District, Beijing. It was built in the late Northern Zhou Dynasty and has a history of more than 1,300 years. It has been repaired in successive dynasties.

This is a solid pagoda with a dense-eaved octagonal brick-wood structure. It has thirteen floors and a total height of 56 meters. It is composed of three major parts: tower base, tower body, and tower top. It is one of the taller and larger pagodas in Beijing area and also one of the landmark buildings in Tongzhou. The saying ‘Recognizing Tongzhou by a tower shadow’ refers to this pagoda. The Boya Pagoda of Peking University was built with reference to this burning lamp pagoda.

The tower base of the ancient pagoda is in the form of a Sumeru pedestal with double waists. On the front side of the lower waist, a large brick with a relief of a single dragon is embedded, which is a relic of the Liao Dynasty. On the upper waist, there are small doors carved like niches, and inside are brick carvings of Buddhist stories. At each corner, there are round-carved powerful god statues placed, wearing armor and helmets, vivid and lifelike. On each rafter of the tower body, there is an exquisite copper bell hanging, a total of 2,232. The outer wall of each bell is engraved with the names of devout men and women.

Originally, there was an ancient elm tree growing on this pagoda. Now it has been transplanted to the lakeside under the pagoda. It still grows lushly and is very spectacular. Tourists can stand under the pagoda and look up at the magnificent landscape of the ‘ancient pagoda reaching the clouds’; they can also admire the beautiful reflection of the burning lamp pagoda in the ancient canal, surrounded by green trees, extremely beautiful.

Opening hours: Open all year round from 8:00 to 16:00. The specific opening hours are subject to the on-site announcements of the scenic spot.
