Shixia Guan Great Wall, also known as the Remnant Great Wall, is located 5 kilometers southwest of the Badaling Great Wall Scenic Area. It is characterized by towering mountains, deep ravines, and dangerous passes. The Great Wall’s fortresses are connected, and watchtowers face each other, preserving its original state with numerous ruins and remains. The developed Remnant Great Wall area covers 2 square kilometers, with approximately 2000 meters of the Great Wall within this range, and only about 100 meters are currently open to the public.
Shixia Guan Great Wall was the path that Li Zicheng took when he attacked Beijing through a weakly defended area, entering the city overnight. Historically, during the Ming Dynasty, it held an equal status with the Badaling Great Wall as a military stronghold, both under the jurisdiction of Juyongguan, forming part of the Great Wall’s defense system and a crucial passage from the frontier to Beijing. There are two climbing routes: the east route follows newly built stone steps up the mountain, with a viewing platform halfway up; the west route ascends along newly built trails to a gap in the Remnant Great Wall. In spring, the ‘Apricot Flower Slope’ and in midsummer, the ‘Broom Flower Valley’, are important photographic spots. Opening hours are subject to the daily operational status.Shixia Guan Great Wall
