Prince Gong’s Mansion, formally known as the residence of Prince Senggelinqin, is an impressive historical site located at No. 73, 75, and 77 Chaodou Hutong, with a rear entrance on Banchang Hutong. Spanning across two hutongs, the mansion’s scale is indeed remarkable.
At the eastern entrance of Banchang Hutong, you’ll find an ancestral hall of the Senggelinqin family, which has been transformed into a prestigious courtyard hotel with international acclaim. Senggelinqin, a renowned general of the late Qing Dynasty, was the twenty-sixth descendant of Genghis Khan’s brother, Khasar. He was a distinguished military leader who fought in the wars against the British and French allied forces.
After Senggelinqin’s death, the mansion gradually disintegrated over the course of a century, with parts being divided and sold off. Although it no longer possesses its original grandeur, traces of its former splendor can still be seen in the remaining structures. However, these structures, now used as dormitories or residential buildings, are not open for public tours.
Nevertheless, a stroll along Chaodou Hutong and Banchang Hutong will reveal the mansion’s eye-catching features. These include shadow walls, colored roof paintings, grand entrance gates, exquisite door stones, and brick carvings. When visiting, please note that the opening hours are subject to the daily operational status.
