Huangyaguan Great Wall is located on the north side of Jixian County, Tianjin City, and is a section of the ancient Great Wall that was first built during the Northern Qi Dynasty and later rebuilt under the supervision of Qi Jiguang during the Ming Dynasty. This section of the Great Wall is characterized by its steep terrain and magnificent presence, with fewer tourists. There are numerous farmhouses at the foot of the Great Wall for accommodation and dining, making it an ideal destination for weekend leisure and vacation in the Beijing-Tianjin area.
Huangyaguan Great Wall has two entrances, the east being Taipingzhai and the west being the main entrance, Huangya Main Pass. The distance between the two entrances is 2.2 kilometers. Visitors can walk along the Great Wall from one entrance to the other, which takes approximately 1-2 hours. Additionally, there is a pass city at Huangya Main Pass that can be visited, with a total tour time of about 3 hours in the scenic area. Most visitors will first arrive at the outside of Huangya Main Pass, but it is not recommended to enter the scenic area from here. Instead, it is recommended to first reach the Taipingzhai entrance and then proceed to Huangya Main Pass. This way, the journey is downhill, saving physical strength, and the main farmhouses are located near Huangya Main Pass, allowing for direct check-in and rest after the tour, avoiding the need to retrace one’s steps and ensuring comfort. There is an electric vehicle service between the two entrances, with a drive time of about half an hour (15 kilometers of mountain road), and the ticket price is 30 yuan per person. Upon entering Taipingzhai, visitors will first see a huge statue of Qi Jiguang within the scenic area, commemorating this famous general who supervised the rebuilding of the Great Wall and military affairs here. It is a good spot for taking photos. After entering from behind the statue, one arrives on the Great Wall, where one can walk and tour along the way. The advantage of entering from here is that it is a downhill journey, saving energy, but this section of the Great Wall is quite steep, so visitors should be extra careful while walking. During the tour, one can see the extremely steep hillside with exposed yellow cliffs, which is how Huangyaguan got its name. In the evening, the sunset on the cliffs is very beautiful, and this is one of the top ten scenes of Tianjin, ‘Sunset at Huangya’, which photography enthusiasts must not miss. Walking along the Great Wall, one will pass by Widow’s Tower, Dazigou, Pass City, and many other pass cities, each with unique stories. For example, Widow’s Tower was built by the widows of soldiers who died while building the Great Wall using their own pensions, which is very touching and worth visiting and remembering. Arriving at the end of the journey is Huangya Main Pass, where there is a pass city, also known as the Bagua City. The entire city is an ancient quadrangle-style architecture, with a complex but square layout, also known as the Bagua Maze, which is great for aerial photography. There is also a simple Great Wall Museum, stele forest, and garden within the pass city for casual viewing. Continuing west from the pass city, there is more of the Great Wall to see and tour, which can be visited if one still has the energy.Hiking up a 500-meter uphill path, one can encounter the Huangya Ladder, a particularly steep and pristine section of the Huangya Pass Great Wall. The incline is extremely high, seemingly leading to the sky, making it perfect for photography. At the end of the path, one can still see a preserved section of the Northern Qi Dynasty Great Wall, which is very ancient and pristine. After touring, visitors can exit from the main Huangya Pass and return on the same day, or choose to stay overnight. There are some simple farmhouses nearby where one can dine and stay. The cost of a standard room in a farmhouse is about 100 yuan per room, allowing visitors to taste local cuisine, breathe fresh air, and enjoy the authentic rural life.
