The Shanghai Textile Museum is located at the original site of Shenxin Textile No. 9 Factory with a history of 130 years. It has three floors of exhibition halls, showing the historical changes of the textile industry in Shanghai. The exhibition hall is composed of an entrance hall, a history hall, a selection hall, a science hall, and a special hall. The museum also displays bone needles that appeared in the late Paleolithic period, the Majiabang culture well reflecting the living conditions of ancient people in Shanghai 6,000 years ago, as well as Hanfu and Hu clothing on the Silk Road during the Western Han Dynasty.
The expensive exhibit in the museum is a set of imported teak furniture including a long table and 12 square chairs. It was used when Li Hongzhang and others prepared to establish the Shanghai Mechanical Weaving Bureau in 1878. The placement of Western-style tables and chairs, combined with the full carvings of patterns such as Investiture of the Gods and The Peony Pavilion on the table legs and stool feet, is precisely the product of the gradual influence of Western culture at that time.
