Xixi National Wetland Park

Xixi National Wetland Park is located in the western part of Hangzhou city, only 6 kilometers away from the main urban area of Wulin Gate, and just 5 kilometers from West Lake. Xixi originated in the Han and Jin dynasties, developed during the Tang and Song dynasties, flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties, declined in the Republic of China period, and has been revitalized in contemporary times.

Historically, Hangzhou was known for the ‘Three Wests’: West Lake, Xixi, and Xiling. The historical Xixi covered an area of about 60 square kilometers, and the currently protected Xixi Wetland has a total area of approximately 10.38 square kilometers. It features ten scenic spots such as ‘Autumn Reeds and Snow’, ‘Imperial Traces at Gao Zhuang’, ‘Fishing Village Mist and Rain’, ‘Riverbank Listening to Music’, ‘Dragon Boat Festival’, ‘Winding Waters Seeking Plum Blossoms’, ‘Persimmons Reflecting on Waves’, ‘Lotus Beach with Egret Shadows’, ‘Hong Garden’s Remaining Charm’, and ‘Reed Moon Drifting’, as well as the ‘Three Dikes’: ‘Blessing Dike’, ‘Green Dike’, and ‘Longevity Dike’.

Xixi is one of the few rare wetlands in China that integrates urban, agricultural, and cultural wetlands. It is also one of the earliest national wetland parks in the country. Xixi Wetland embodies the five major cultural elements of ‘Buddhism, Seclusion, Secularity, Leisure, and Wilderness’, with distinct characteristics in different areas: ‘Secluded South, Secular North, Bustling East, and Tranquil West’.

The essence of Xixi culture is encapsulated in ‘One Garden and Five Lands’: Hong Garden, the debut place of Yue Opera, the sacred land of poets, the breeding ground of Water Margin, the leisure place for literati, and the concentrated area of folk customs.
Xixi boasts a 300-acre plum forest with various varieties such as River Plum, Palace Powder, Cinnabar, Green Calyx, Jade Butterfly, and Beauty Plum.

The best places to appreciate plum blossoms in Xixi are in the Mei Bamboo Leisure Area, Mei Zhu Mountain Villa, and Xixi Plum Villa, with a concentration along the Mei Di from Zhoujia Village to Gao Zhuang, where many plum blossoms are also planted. From November to December until March of the following year, different varieties of plum blossoms bloom successively. ‘Winding Waters Seeking Plum Blossoms, Rowing Boats to Explore Plum Blossoms’ is a unique way to appreciate plum blossoms in Xixi.
