Yutai Mountain Scenic Area, a blessed fairyland, is situated 12 kilometers east of Fuling City, at the confluence of the Yangtze River and Wujiang River. It is a serene destination, 119 kilometers from the main urban area of Chongqing, known for its rain-praying culture and offering a blend of sightseeing, health preservation, vacation, and business conferences.
At an elevation of 862 meters above sea level, Yutai Mountain has a rich history as a site for ancient rain prayers during droughts. It was formerly known as Hongdu Mountain. Post the Eastern Han Dynasty, it became known as Baidi Mountain, as historical records indicate that Gongsun Shu stationed troops here. In the Tang Dynasty, Erzhu Xian was believed to have planted pine trees on the mountain for health and cultivation, leading to its alternative name, Zhongsong Mountain. During the Ming Dynasty, on the eighth day of the sixth lunar month in the sixteenth year of Chongzhen, Zhang Xianzhong entered Sichuan and planted a flag atop the mountain to survey the military situation in Fuling, thus earning it the name Chaqi Mountain.
The origin of the first rain-praying altar on Yutai Mountain is lost to history, but the existing remnant stele records its reconstruction during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. The scenic area begins at the Wujiang River in the south, extends to the Yangtze River in the northwest, and includes Zilu Creek in the east, where the three rivers meet and converge, creating a picturesque landscape.Yutai Mountain, historically known as Zoumaling, is renowned for its Pengfu post road. The mountain is surrounded by cliffs on three sides, with a ridge connecting to the outside only at the southern end. The terrain is gentle, offering a lush landscape of green pines and bamboos, and boasting a high vegetation coverage rate of over 96%. It is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna.
At the summit, 12 peaks encircle the nearly 100-mu Xianhe Lake, whose waters remain crystal clear throughout the year. Activities such as bamboo rafting, natural bathing, and lakeside camping are available for visitors. Accommodation is provided by Yutai Mountain Resort and Xingyue Mountain Villa, which can host 400 guests daily, while the conference center can seat 300 people. The site also features a health care center, karaoke hall, and a high-altitude speed slide, all accessible to tourists year-round. The square is capable of hosting fireworks and bonfire parties for 500 to 1000 people.
Cultural events are a significant part of Yutai Mountain’s appeal. The Bathing Culture Festival takes place at the natural bath from May to October each year. During the lunar months of July and August, the Rain-Praying Maiden Selection Contest and the New Rice Festival are celebrated. During the Spring Festival, the Yutai Mountain Temple Fair is held, attracting thousands.
