Dongpingzhou, officially known as Pingzhou. To avoid confusion with another island, Peng Chau, the word ‘east’ is added for identification. It is an island in the northeast of Hong Kong. Composed of sedimentary rocks, the coastal marine erosion landforms are ever-changing. The interesting shale and various other natural wonders make Dongpingzhou a famous geological and geomorphological treasure trove in Hong Kong. It is also included in the scope of Hong Kong’s UNESCO Global Geopark. The sea area near Dongpingzhou is the fourth marine park in Hong Kong – Dongpingzhou Coastal Park. There are shells and corals growing on the shore. Due to natural erosion, the island is covered with shale and has become a hotspot for suburban tourism and geographical investigations. However, Dongpingzhou belongs to a country park and is one of the islands in Plover Cove (Extension) Country Park. There are also two fishing areas and two barbecue sites on the island.
