The Underwater Village is a unique scenic spot in Haikou City, created by an earthquake. During the Ming Dynasty, a massive earthquake in Qiongbei caused more than 70 villages to sink extensively, turning land into sea and leaving the earthquake ruins submerged. If you are fortunate enough to encounter a significant low tide, from Dongzhai Port to Puqian Bay, the ruins of ancient villages can be faintly seen on the beach. Basalt stone coffins, tombstones, stone wells, and rice-pounding stones are arranged in order. Under the sea between Puqian Bay and Bei Chuang Port, you can clearly see an exquisitely carved ‘Chastity Arch’, with schools of fish and shrimp swimming around it, resembling the mythical ‘Underwater Dragon Palace’. The site is open all year round, accessible 24/7. A must-see tip: from May to June each year during low tides, it is an ideal time to take a boat tour to view the Underwater Village. If lucky, you can see through the water to the outlines of houses, wells, stone pillars, arches, and stages that were submerged in the sea years ago. However, whether you can see the ‘Underwater Village’ depends on the conditions.
