Denglou Jiao is the lighthouse at the southernmost tip of mainland China, constructed in the 16th year of the Guangxu era (1890), located in Xuwen County, Zhanjiang City. It faces Hainan Island across the sea and serves as a navigational beacon for the Qiongzhou Strait, the South China Sea islands, and the Beibu Gulf. It is also a symbol of the southernmost point of mainland China.
During the imperialist period, powers such as France, Britain, and Russia built residences here, and Western-style houses still surround the lighthouse, attracting many tourists for sightseeing. Denglou Jiao is not only famous for its historical relics but also for the scenic views from the tower. The vast expanse of misty waves, the broad sea and sky, and the lush, vibrant tropical plants such as coconut trees, casuarina trees, acacia trees, cacti, shrubs, sea grass flowers, and mangroves swaying in the wind are unique to Denglou Jiao.
Watching the sunrise and sunset from the lighthouse, a day quietly passes by. On a lucky day, one can witness the spectacular ‘rolling waves’ coming from afar in Hainan, one after another. Additionally, the sea area around Denglou Jiao preserves large and complete coral reef groups, rich in variety and colorful. The coral reefs, which purify the seawater, add endless charm to the pristine ocean.
The area is open all year round, accessible 24/7, with specific business hours subject to daily operations.
