Huguangyan Scenic Area, located about 19 kilometers southwest of Zhanjiang city, is a renowned volcanic crater scenic spot. Formed approximately 200,000 years ago, Huguangyan is one of the three existing volcanic lakes in China and one of the few maar lakes in the world, aside from Manderscheid in Germany. The area features a variety of geological characteristics, including coastal landforms and tectonic geological landforms, with exceptional natural scenery.
As a typical representative of China’s maar lakes, the sediment at the bottom of Huguangyan Lake faithfully records the changes in ancient climate and environment over hundreds of thousands of years, containing rich information on the changes in tropical and subtropical climate environments, earning it the title of ‘Natural Environmental Change Annals’ from experts. Surrounded by volcanic walls, the lake water is as clear as a mirror, with steep cliffs around, and volcanic rock layers and rhythms are clearly visible.
The park is home to ancient trees, entwining vines, lush vegetation, and a high-density area of negative oxygen ions, making it a ‘Natural Oxygen Bar’. Strolling along the lake, one feels refreshed and at ease. With a long history, Buddhist monks built ancient temples like Lengyan Temple and Baiyi Temple against the rock during the Sui Dynasty, and the cliff inscription ‘Huguangyan’ written by the Song Dynasty’s Prime Minister Li Gang still exists today.
Regarding Maar Lakes: Maar lakes are extremely rare volcanic lakes formed by the cooling of volcanic eruptions and the accumulation of water from the sinking land. The lake water, originating from groundwater seepage, has a natural self-purification function, so it never dries up regardless of drought or flood.
