Mr. Zhang Cangshu’s Memorial Hall

Zhang Cangshu, styled Xuan Zhu and named Huangyan, was a distinguished national hero during the late Ming Dynasty. He is celebrated alongside Yu Qian and Yue Fei as one of the ‘Three Heroes of West Lake’. In his honor, the Zhang Cangshu Memorial Hall was erected near Taiziwan in West Lake, with his tomb situated nearby.

The memorial hall is a treasure trove of history and art, featuring steles, statues, plaques, paintings, and couplets that exude a strong historical atmosphere and artistic charm. Within its walls, ten steles are inscribed with the deeds, poetry, and inscriptions by later generations about Mr. Zhang Cangshu. Eight murals vividly portray his life, marked by his concern for the country and his love for the people. The hall is further adorned with plaques written by contemporary calligraphy masters such as Sha Menghai and Qi Gong, which lend an air of solemnity and dignity to the space.

The hall and the tomb together create an ancient and serene ambiance, nestled among green pines and cypresses, with the gentle presence of small bridges and flowing water. This setting makes it an ideal spot for a peaceful visit. The memorial hall is open to the public all year round from Monday to Sunday, with visiting hours from 08:30 to 16:30.
