Gulou Church is a renowned Christian church located in Hangzhou, China, established in 1885 and reconstructed in 1931 in the style of a Chinese palace church. The sanctuary features a building with upturned eaves and corners, a roof covered with green glazed cylindrical tiles, a concrete frame structure, solid brick walls, and large steel windows on all four walls. The overall architecture is majestic and was considered at the time as the only double-eaved hipped roof building with Chinese characteristics in the southern part of the city.
The interior ceiling is adorned with court-style painted and carved patterns, and on the pillars beside the podium, there is a couplet that reads ‘Thank the Lord for the gift of life-giving water, sing the Messiah’s song that moves the tides of Zhejiang’, which is said to be the work of General Zhang Zhijiang.
