Genshan Gate, one of the ten ancient city gates of Hangzhou, was constructed in the late Southern Song Dynasty and served as the city’s ancient northeastern gate. Since the Song and Yuan dynasties, individual silk weaving and mechanized spinning workshops have been scattered around the area, establishing it as the primary production base for the world-renowned ‘Hangzhou silk’. A folk song, ‘Silk baskets outside the dam gate’, reflects the area’s silk industry heritage.

The folk custom ‘Genshan Racing’ captures the grandeur of the annual early summer morning boat races. Unfortunately, due to road construction, the gate was dismantled. In order to preserve the memory of the city’s evolution, a monument has been erected at this site to commemorate its historical significance. The opening hours and business status are subject to the day’s availability.
