Standing at a towering height of 20.8 meters, with ears large enough to accommodate a person, Tian Gong Da Fo is recognized as one of the four major stone Buddhas in Zhejiang. The Buddha features a broad face and forehead, embodying a compassionate and benevolent demeanor with a plump and round face, exuding a tranquil and dignified presence. This ancient stone carving is a treasure of Jiangnan’s art, distinct from numerous other semi-round and relief stone Buddhas found across China, as it is a full-round sculpture, with the Buddha’s back not connected to the niche, signifying its exceptional cultural value.
The prayer platform in front of the Buddha measures 23 meters in length, 21 meters in width, and 1.2 meters in height, engraved with characters and the ‘Six-Word Mantra’. Surrounding the platform, there are 48 stone Buddhas carved on the outer stone railings. Encircled by a pool of water, the stone Buddha sits amidst the remnants of ancient quarrying, which were submerged for centuries.
