Pearl Spring Scenic Area is located in the northwest of Nanjing city, 7 kilometers away from Pukou Railway Station. The core attraction, Pearl Spring, is emerald green and crystal clear. The Great Wall, built against the mountain, allows visitors to experience the grandeur of being a hero without going to Badaling. The scenic area is equipped with a wildlife park, amusement park, and water world, making it an ideal destination for family outings.
Pearl Spring Scenic Area has multiple entrances, with the main ones being the East and West Gates. The West Gate is closer to the most important attraction, Pearl Spring, and is therefore recommended as the entry point. In the 18th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1590 AD), during a severe drought in Nanjing, the residents of Pukou still had a bountiful harvest due to the presence of Pearl Spring. The spring became famous and was praised as the ‘Number One Scenic Spot in Jiangbei’. Today, one can still see the cliff inscription from the Ming Dynasty, ‘Ten Thousand Hectares of Pearls’, by the lake. Pearl Spring is also known as Sunny Rain Spring and Welcome Spring. An interesting phenomenon is that clapping by the lake will cause a string of pearl-like bubbles to emerge continuously.
The Great Wall, which starts from Pearl Spring and heads north, is all uphill, leading to the Great Wall. Built in the 1990s, the wall resembles the Badaling Great Wall. It is 3000 meters long and is constructed on the Furong Peak, Miaogao Peak, and Lion Peak, which stretch from west to east. The highest peak, Miaogao Peak, has an elevation of 255.5 meters. Climbing to the top of the Great Wall castle on Miaogao Peak offers a panoramic view of the scenery below. Although the Great Wall is not very high, the continuous steps can be tiring. It takes about 2 hours to explore the Great Wall at a leisurely pace. Alternatively, you can take a cable car directly to Miaogao Peak, which requires a separate ticket and is priced according to the scenic area’s standards.
For visitors with children, the wildlife park within the scenic area is a must-visit. The park has a limited variety of animals, focusing on ‘fierce beasts’ such as tigers, lions, and black bears. It is a delight to see the young ones of these animals. The highlight of the zoo is the two performances, the Dream Theater, which is indoor, featuring acts like lion-to-mouth feeding and tigers walking on a plum blossom stake. Showtimes are at 10:30 and 14:30.
On the eastern side of Pearl Spring, by the Mirror Mountain Lake, there are numerous water amusement projects. The bamboo rafting, where water fights are popular, is a favorite. The amusement park within the scenic area offers bumper cars, roller coasters, and rapids rides, all of which require additional payment, ranging from 10 to 60 yuan. Near the East Gate of the scenic area is the Water World, similar to the Happy Magic Cube Water Park, but with the unique feature that the water in the amusement facilities is authentic spring water.
For dining, one can visit Ding Mountain Pavilion; alternatively, you can prepare some barbecue food and head to the camping and barbecue area, which provides paid cooking stoves and tents. Therefore, spending a weekend camping and picnicking at Pearl Spring Scenic Area with friends is also a good choice. Additionally, you can visit the Buddha Art Museum within the scenic area, and on the east side of the scenic area, there is the Zhaofu International Golf Course.
In addition to the Pearl Spring Scenic Area, visitors can also explore the nearby Famous Stone Art Museum, Sifang Art Museum, and Fo Shou Lake. The scenic area is open all year round from 08:30 to 17:00.
