Wuyi Lane, situated to the south of the Confucius Temple, has a rich history dating back to the Three Kingdoms period. It was here that the barracks for the Wu Kingdom’s garrison guarding the Stone City stood, and the soldiers, dressed in black uniforms, gave the lane its name ‘Wuyi’.
Entering the early Eastern Jin Dynasty, Wuyi Lane became the residence of the influential minister Wang Dao. Over time, it evolved into a residential area for the prominent Wang and Xie families, among others. The lane was a hub of activity, attracting visitors and serving as a gathering place for the elite. It was also the birthplace of notable cultural figures such as Wang Xizhi, Wang Xianzhi, and Xie Lingyun, the progenitor of the landscape poetry school. Wuyi Lane stands as a testament to the artistic achievements of the Wang and Xie families and is deeply intertwined with the broader tapestry of Chinese cultural history.
In 1997, the Wang Dao Xie An Memorial Hall was reconstructed in Wuyi Lane, capturing the essence of the national character. The hall extensively collects historical materials and cultural relics, offering visitors a window into the historical narrative of the Wang and Xie families, represented by Wang Dao and Xie An during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and the ancient capital of Nanjing during the Six Dynasties period. It allows one to reflect on the achievements and accomplishments of many prominent figures in politics, military, and culture of that era.
The main buildings within the ancient residence include the Laiyan Hall and the Jianjin Tower. Exhibits within the hall showcase the history and culture of the Six Dynasties, a diorama of the Battle of Fei River, an Eastern Jin living quarters display room, and a Six Dynasties calligraphy and painting, sculpture hall, and a mural hall of the Luoshenfu. These exhibits provide a comprehensive understanding of the Wang and Xie families’ contributions to Chinese culture and history.Confucius Temple Visitor Center is open year-round, operating throughout the entire day.
