Sixi Yancun is one of the scenic spots on the northern line of Wuyuan. It is composed of two villages, Sixi and Yancun. Many Huizhou merchants in the Ming and Qing Dynasties came from here. The exquisite ‘stone carvings, wood carvings, and brick carvings’ in the luxurious courtyard are particularly outstanding among the old Huizhou buildings in Wuyuan. The 1987 version of ‘Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio’ and the TV series ‘Blue and White Porcelain’ were both filmed here.
Near the entrance of the scenic area is Yancun. Sixi Village is farther away, about 2 kilometers. You can take the sightseeing battery car in the scenic area at the entrance. Tourists usually take a car to Sixi Village, and then walk around while shopping and slowly walk back to Yancun. There is a large field of rapeseed flowers between the two villages. When the rapeseed flowers bloom in spring, it is extremely beautiful. In comparison, the scenery of Sixi Village is better. Just cross the covered bridge over the river, Tongji Bridge. Walking into the village not far, passing Zhenyuantang and arriving at the Hundred Longevity Flower Hall. Ninety-six ‘longevity’ characters with different fonts are engraved on the window panes of 12 floor-to-ceiling long windows. This kind of large-scale Hundred Longevity Picture carved in relief is very rare among the people. The corbels under the eaves are not the common lions and unicorns, but the elegant moonlight over the lotus pond, egrets catching fish with their beaks outstretched, blooming lotus flowers, and plump lotus roots, which are very unique. The Hundred Longevity Flower Hall is connected with Jizhitang and Chengdetang next to it. Behind them are several old houses such as the silver treasury, Huayixuan, and Qiyeyanxiang. There are several rather outstanding carvings to see. The owners of some houses also sell some souvenirs inside. Briefly visit Jingxutang. Beside the door of Jingxutang is a simple study. There is a large garden in front. There is a small gourd-shaped niche on the wall with the four characters ‘Respect and Cherish Writing Paper’, showing the ancient respect for culture. The wood carvings of drama figures, landscapes, birds and beasts on the second floor are complete. Unfortunately, most of the heads of the wood carving figures have been destroyed. Another thing worth mentioning is that Jingxutang is the main location for filming ‘Strange Tales from a Lonely Studio’. Tourists can relive the scenes in the play here. At this point, all the scenic spots in Sixi have been visited. Walking across the wooden bridge over the water is a viewing platform with a relatively high elevation. Looking around, there are verdant hills in the distance and villages with white walls and black tiles nearby. It is suitable for taking a very ‘Wuyuan’ standard photo. Yancun on the other side of the bridge is a famous group of merchant courtyards. The characteristic is the ‘merchant’ shaped gate and brick carvings. Almost every courtyard gate is in the shape of a ‘merchant’ character. The tall buildings and high walls are quite imposing. The distribution of several main courtyards in Yancun is roughly a circle. Walking counterclockwise are Yuqingtang, Dujingtang, Xunjingtang, Congtingtang, Mingxun Shutang, and Liuxiang Guilou. It can be walked through in about half an hour to an hour. The opening hours are from 07:30 to 18:30 all year round.
