Qixia Mountain

Qixia Mountain, also known as She Mountain, is located approximately 22 kilometers northeast of downtown Nanjing in Qixia Town, named after the Qixia Temple built in the mountains. Qixia Mountain has three peaks, with the main peak at an elevation of 313 meters. The mountain is home to numerous historical sites such as Qixia Temple and the Sarira Pagoda, as well as natural wonders like Qingfeng Sword, Tiankai Rock, and the One-line Sky.

Qixia Mountain is famous for its red maple leaves during the Red Maple Festival, which is held annually from October to December, lasting about 50 days, and the sight of the mountain covered in red maple leaves is quite spectacular. In spring and summer, the focus is on the quiet and charming mountain scenery. In winter, when it is colder, visitors can appreciate the cultural and historical sites.

Upon entering the mountain, the first scenic spot is the Mirror Lake (also known as ‘Rainbow Mirror Lake’), which features a lake pavilion connected to the shore by a winding bridge, exquisitely designed. To the east is the main attraction of Qixia Mountain, Qixia Temple, where the Thousand Buddhas’ Meal Hall offers unique vegetarian dishes such as mushrooms and vegetarian chicken, although they are relatively expensive.

Not far east of Qixia Temple is an approximately 18-meter-high Sarira Pagoda, whose outer walls are adorned with vivid and lifelike reliefs, making it elegant and worth visiting. Near the Sarira Pagoda is the Thousand Buddhas Grotto, where the famous ‘Eastern Flying Apsaras’ can be found in niche 102, which is worth a detailed study for those interested.

Additionally, there are many other scenic spots on Qixia Mountain. Climbing to the top of the Hu Mountain on the northwest side, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the rolling Yangtze River from the Biyun Pavilion. On the southern slope of the Ping Mountain Head, there is a rare grey rock with a wavy surface, known as ‘Wave Rock’. It is said that Emperor Qianlong visited the south five times and stayed in Qixia on six occasions, but now the Qianlong Palace has been destroyed, leaving only some relics located at the central peak.
