Ma Yinchu’s Former Residence, situated at No. 210 Qingchun Road in Hangzhou City, is a historic site. The main building, a Sino-Western brick and wood structure garden villa, was constructed in the late Qing Dynasty and spans an area of approximately 486 square meters across three floors. Above the balcony on the south wall of the third floor, the words ‘Bamboo House’ are inscribed, giving the building its alternative name. Ma Yinchu acquired this residence in 1936 and resided here from 1936 until the summer of 1937. After the Anti-Japanese War’s victory in 1945, he returned to live here for a time, and during his presidency at Zhejiang University from August 1949 to 1951, he continued to reside in the Bamboo House. It was within these walls that Ma Yinchu penned some of his economic treatises and speeches.
The Ma Yinchu Memorial Hall now stands at his former residence. After careful restoration, the old house has largely preserved its original appearance. The first and second floors have been transformed into exhibition halls, with Ma’s study and bedroom restored to their former state. The hall showcases a collection of photos, historical materials, writings, and autographs from various periods of Ma’s life, organized into 10 thematic sections: ‘Studying in the West’, ‘Guardian of the Nation’, ‘Discussing National Affairs’, ‘A Master of His Time’, ‘Population Theory’, ‘Upholding the Truth’, and ‘Shining Light on Humanity’. These topics offer a glimpse into Ma’s illustrious life that spanned a century. The exhibition hall also features original items used by Ma Yinchu, including desks, bookshelves, lamps, high stools, lounge chairs, wheelchairs, and displayed clothing and hats.The hall is open all year round, operating from 09:00 to 16:30 daily.
