The stele of ‘Hairpin Phoenix’ is located in Shen’s Garden. According to historical records, Lu You married his cousin Tang Wan as his wife when he was around 20 years old. Lu You was handsome, forthright and talented. Tang Wan was beautiful and talented, proficient in poetry. They were of similar interests. Later, due to the coercion of Lu You’s mother, the two had to endure tears and part reluctantly and marry others respectively. In the spring of the 25th year of Shaoxing, Lu You and Tang Wan met unexpectedly in Shen’s Garden. Tang Wan was very attentive to Lu You and sent food and wine to Lu You through her family. Lu You recalled the past and was filled with emotions. He spontaneously inscribed the poem ‘Hairpin Phoenix’ on the garden wall of Shen’s Garden. For more than 800 years, people always associate Shen’s Garden with Lu You, making it a famous garden through the ages where people recall this unwavering and sincere love. However, after so many years, the sunken surface buildings of the Song Dynasty no longer exist, and the wall where Lu You inscribed ‘Hairpin Phoenix’ cannot be found either. This stele of ‘Hairpin Phoenix’ is recomposed with Lu You’s handwriting. Opening hours: open all day throughout the year.
