The so-called Thirty-Three Heavens actually refers to the 33 steps on the west side of the Liao Yang Hall. The top of these steps is known as the South Heavenly Gate, colloquially referred to as the ladder to heaven. Climbing to the top symbolizes ascending one level of heaven per step, leading directly into the heavenly palace. The site is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day.
