Bukouli – A Historical Shanghai Neighborhood

Bukouli is situated at the intersection of Shaanxi South Road and West Jianguo Road in the Luwan District, representing a typical old-style residential complex built by French merchants in 1930. It consists of 78 two-story brick-and-wood Shikumen buildings, forming a complete layout of traditional Shanghai alleyways. The Chinese-style archway at the entrance of the alley is distinctive. The renowned writer Mr. Ba Jin once lived here, with his former residence located at No. 52 Bukouli. It was here that he created works such as ‘The Dream of the Sea’. Additionally, this place was once home to other notable figures such as Hu Huaichen, Zhang Chenbo, and Ping Hailan. The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the daily opening conditions.
