The Great Compassion Hall, also known as the main hall of Puji Temple, is equivalent to the Mahavira Hall in ordinary temples. ‘Great Compassion’ is an epithet of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, and this hall is dedicated to the worship of Avalokitesvara. The hall is grand and majestic, with a breadth of seven bays and a depth of six bays, featuring double eaves and a mountain-style roof, topped with yellow glazed tiles, nine layers of dougong brackets, and double dragon playing with a pearl carved on the door panel. The hall can accommodate thousands of people and is known as the ‘Living Great Hall’.

Surrounding the platform in front of the hall are stone-carved railings, with a steel cauldron in the center, approximately 4 meters high, inscribed with ‘Puji Zen Temple’ and ‘Millennium Treasure Cauldron’. Inside the hall, at the center, sits an 8.8-meter-tall statue of Avalokitesvara (the statue itself is 6.5 meters tall, with a base of 2.3 meters), entirely golden, with clear eyebrows and eyes, a benevolent smile, flanked by her disciples Sudhana and the Dragon Girl, displaying an innocent and lively demeanor.
