Ciyun Zen Temple, also known as Ciyun Hermitage or Xinle Hermitage, commonly referred to as ‘Xin’an’, is located to the west of the Putuo Mountain Coastal Archway. It was established during the Ming Dynasty’s Wanli period, rebuilt during the Qing Dynasty’s Guangxu period, and reopened to the public after renovation in 1991. The temple embodies the tranquility of Buddhist mountain gates and the essence of Buddhist culture.

At the beginning of the liberation, Ciyun Zen Temple was sparsely attended, with monks scattered and the temple repurposed as ‘Putuo Mountain Grain Station’. In 1988, it was reclaimed by the Buddhist Association and rebuilt. In August 1993, the east and west wings, totaling 752 square meters, were extensively renovated, surpassing their former state.

The main hall enshrines the Bodhisattva Guanyin, with 14 rooms on each side wing, and 39 rooms in the temple complex, covering an area of 1392.23 square meters. Monks practice and worship the Bodhisattva Guanyin here. The courtyard’s southern wall overlooks the Lianhua Ocean, offering a unique view.
