The Confucian Temple was formerly known as the ‘Sacred Temple’ and ‘School Palace’. It is a ceremonial architectural complex for worshipping Confucius. According to records in ‘Anqing Prefecture Annals’ and ‘Tongcheng County Annals’ of the Qing Dynasty: Tongcheng Confucian Temple was originally outside the eastern suburbs of the county seat. It was first built in the early years of Yuan Yanyou (1314 AD) and was destroyed by war at the end of the Yuan Dynasty. In the early years of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty, Magistrate Qu Nahai moved the Confucian Temple to its current location. Later, it was repeatedly damaged by war and erosion by wind and rain. In 1853, during the third year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty, it was severely damaged, with only the stone Lingxing Gate remaining. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was repaired 19 times. In 1864 and 1866, the gentry and magistrates of the county donated money and raised funds to start repairing the Confucian Temple. Structures such as screen walls, gate towers,泮 pools (bridges), Dacheng Gate, Wenchang Shrine, Chongsheng Shrine, long corridors on the east and west sides, Dacheng Hall, Minglun Hall and palace walls were built. Taking Dacheng Gate as the boundary, it is divided into front and back courtyards, and it has reached the scale of today’s Confucian Temple. Although the Confucian Temple has experienced repeated rises and falls, it still retains its original appearance. The newly renovated Confucian Temple still has a magnificent layout, is simple and elegant, on a large scale, and is integrated as if it were a set of beautiful凝固 melodies. The two characters ‘Confucian Temple’ inlaid with gold on the front of the gate tower are inscribed by Mr. Zhao Puchu.
