Ai Mountain Scenic Area, located about 20 kilometers from the city center, is the only natural landscape complex in Jiaozhou City that integrates mountains, water, and plains. It is also a comprehensive scenic area rich in historical and cultural connotations. The scenic area is situated at the junction of Yanghe Town, Zhangying Town, and Dongcheng Township in Jiaozhou City, consisting of four scenic spots: Ai Mountain, Dongshi, Xishi, and Shanzhou Reservoir, covering a total area of 8.6 square kilometers. As Ai Mountain Scenic Area is a place for the propagation of Taoism, there have been numerous temples and statues since ancient times, with a thriving incense culture. Ai Mountain scenic spot, as the highlight of the entire area, is composed of two peaks, the southern peak being the main one with an elevation of 229.2 meters, and the northern peak at 224 meters, featuring the Holy Mother Temple. Dongshi, with an elevation of 137 meters, stands tall and prominent like a lion, and the Jade Emperor Temple at the foot of Dongshi is well-known among the local people. Xishi, with an elevation of about 140 meters, offers a commanding view of the surrounding mountains, allowing visitors to feel the essence of ‘I am the peak when I reach the summit’, with attractions such as the Hall of a Hundred Sons. Dongshi and Xishi in Ai Mountain Scenic Area are acclaimed as one of the eight scenic spots in Jiaozhou – ‘Contending Wonders of Stone Ears’. It is said that Er Lang Shen, due to his transgressions in heaven, was demoted and punished by the Jade Emperor to carry mountains to fill the East Sea. While walking, he stumbled over a stone, causing a stone from each basket to fall and transform into the two stones, which is the origin of ‘Contending Wonders of Stone Ears’. The scenic area is open all year round from 07:30 to 17:30, with specific business hours subject to the day’s opening status.
