The Ancestral Temple of Chinese Characters is on the right side of ‘Baiyun Ancient Temple’ in Xiqiao Town. It was established in 1777 (the 42nd year of Emperor Qianlong’s reign) with donations from 27 literary associations in Jiancun Fort. It was renovated in 1839 (the 19th year of Emperor Daoguang’s reign) and was then dedicated to worshipping the Ancestral Temple of Chinese Characters and enshrining Cang Jie. Cang Jie was the historian of the Yellow Emperor and the creator of Chinese characters, so he is called the ‘ancestor of characters’. The academy is laid out in a two-courtyard quadrangle style with a total area of about 496 square meters. It is a brick-wood structure. The front hall has a hard mountain roof with a raised beam frame. The glazed tile surface has three bays in width and one bay in depth. The eaves of the tiles are decorated with brick carvings of figures, flowers and plants. The ground is paved with large square bricks. There are couplets in official script engraved on the columns: ‘Belonging to the right line, belonging to the left line, belonging to the down line. Culture flows in the same stream. Since the times of Nest and Suirui, the written language has been created and civilized governance has begun. There are Qin official script, Han official script and Jin official script. They change from time to time. Apart from Xu and Shu, there are still many meritorious officials who contribute to it.’ The back hall has three bays in width and three bays in depth. It has a platform beam frame and a hard mountain roof. In terms of planar layout, it is ingenious. In the courtyard’s patio, there is a square four-cornered pavilion. There are couplets engraved on the columns: ‘Kowtow and offer a red pillow. A wisp of heartfelt incense connects to the emperor. Gather deep ink in the chest. For thousands of years, the sage has become an immortal.’ The porch column couplets in official script: ‘Zhuan and seal script, descendants, official script, cursive script, and the later generations multiply and grow day by day, greatly spreading the educational grace. Xi created the heaven with paintings. The bird script observes the earth. All reach a glorious era and release outstanding brilliance.’ Opening hours: Open from 8:30 to 17:00 all year round.
