Ancient Astronomical Observatory

The Ancient Astronomical Observatory in Beijing is one of the relatively ancient astronomical observatories existing in the world and also the astronomical observatory of the Ming and Qing dynasties in China. It is famous all over the world for its complete architecture, complete sets of instruments and long history.


The observatory was built in the seventh year of Zhengtong in the Ming Dynasty (1442 AD). From the early years of Zhengtong in the Ming Dynasty to 1929, the ancient observatory has been engaged in astronomical observation for nearly 500 years. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, it was also an important place for cultural exchanges between China and the West and enjoyed a high reputation at home and abroad.


Opening hours: Open all year round from 09:00 to 16:30.
