After the Western Zhou Dynasty conquered the Shang Dynasty and granted fiefs across the land, King Wu’s brother, the Duke of Zhou, also known as the Duke of Lu, was enfeoffed in Qufu, marking the establishment of the State of Lu. The ruins of the Lu capital are the site where the original city was built.
Constructed at the beginning of the Western Zhou Dynasty, the Lu capital was built strictly in accordance with the regulations of the Zhou rituals. The city was divided into an outer and an inner city. The outer city has an irregular rounded rectangular plan, while the inner city is nearly square, making it one of the better-preserved pre-Qin city sites in China.
