The ancient city wall of Chaling, commonly known as the ‘Ancient City of Southern Song Dynasty’, is located in Qianjin Village, Chengguan Town, Chaling County. The ancient city wall of Chaling was first built in 1231, the fourth year of Shaoding in the Southern Song Dynasty, and completed the following year. From the Ming Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, it was repaired dozens of times. In 1389 of the 22nd year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty and 1764 of the 29th year of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty, major repairs were carried out respectively. There are currently four sections of the existing city wall totaling 1536 meters, two city gates (including the moon city) (Yingxiang Gate and Yingxun Gate), one horse path, more than 700 meters of the city wall along the river, and one iron rhinoceros for suppressing the embankment in the Song Dynasty. The main buildings of these above-ground remains are basically intact, and the remaining city wall foundation sites still exist. In 2001, the people’s government of Chaling County restored 484 meters of the city wall section from Yingxiang Gate to the iron rhinoceros of Chaling, one city tower of Yingxiang Gate, and one turret.
