The copper-leafed tree, also known as the lantern tree, is a deciduous arboreal species native to regions south of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River. It is a rare sight to find such a tree growing on Yantai Mountain, located in the northern coastal area. According to legend, a young soldier from the south, stationed at Yantai Mountain during the Ming Dynasty, missed his hometown by the Yangtze River so much that he often faced south and wept. His tears moved a migrating bird, which, in the following spring, brought a copper-leafed tree seed from the soldier’s hometown and placed it in the soil near the stone cluster in front of the barracks on Yantai Mountain. Soon after, the young copper-leafed tree sprouted and quickly grew into a towering tree. Hence, this tree is also known as the ‘tree of homesickness’. It is open all year round, accessible 24/7, with specific business hours subject to daily opening conditions.
