Aojiang River, originally named Shiyangjiang during the Western Jin Dynasty when Pingyang County was established, was later renamed Hengyangjiang, also known as Qianjiang, and colloquially referred to as Qinglongjiang. Due to the tidal waves at the river’s mouth resembling a giant turtle carrying a mountain during high tide, and the presence of an ancient Ao Mountain Hall (later renamed Ao Zhen Hall) in the Ao Yu area, which symbolizes the giant turtle’s power to calm waves and suppress evil for security, the river was renamed Aojiang. The main stem of the Aojiang River is located within the territory of Pingyang County and is hailed as the mother river of Pingyang County.
