Located at an altitude of 2629 meters, Arrow Bamboo Sea is a remarkable natural wonder. Spanning 1184 meters in length and ranging from 144 to 268 meters in width, this sea presents a depth of 5 to 10 meters, encompassing an area of 151,000 square meters and holding a water volume of 930,000 cubic meters. The surroundings are adorned with lush arrow bamboos and towering Chinese firs, creating a serene and picturesque landscape. The mountains are mirrored in the water, with the bamboo shadows dancing upon the surface, and the lake’s tranquility reflects the dark mountain silhouettes.
The straight and tall tree trunks by the lake appear to grow vividly within the water itself, while the casually fallen trees at the bottom resemble long halberds and giant swords, their surfaces etched with the stories of ancient winds and clouds. Arrow bamboo, a favorite food of giant pandas, thrives abundantly around the shore, giving the Arrow Bamboo Sea its distinct character and name.
The sea’s surface is expansive and its waters a deep blue, with reflections so clear that one might question whether the mountains are submerged in the water or the water is engulfing the mountains. A unique feature of Arrow Bamboo Sea is the presence of calcified dead woods within the lake, atop which new trees can be observed—a phenomenon known as rotten wood renewal, dead wood coming back to life, or regenerated tree.
Arrow Bamboo Sea is also characterized by numerous shallow shoals with clear water at the bottom, adding to its natural beauty and ecological diversity.The magnificent “coral tree” is formed by mineral calcification after naturally falling into the lake. Strangely, sometimes the dead wood is half exposed on the water surface, and there will be new saplings taking root on it. This kind of regenerated tree has become a major characteristic of Arrow Bamboo Sea. In addition, in Zhang Yimou’s movie “Hero”, there were scenes where Broken Sword and Nameless had a sword fight here, making it famous.
