Tong’an is located on the mainland facing the sea to the north of Xiamen Island. Scenic spots in the area include Fantian Temple, Tong’an Confucian Temple, the former residence of Su Song, Yuanhua Film and Television City, Xiaoping Forest Park, etc. There are also tourism, leisure and entertainment venues such as Lianhua National Forest Park, Kaige Golf Course, Cuifeng Hot Spring Hotel, Shengzhixiang Hot Spring Resort, and Zhuba Nanyang Resort.
Tong’an is also known as the “Silver City”, named after the shape of its old county seat resembling a silver ingot. Historically, Tong’an once governed Jinmen and Xiamen Islands, as well as parts of Jimei, Xinglin, Haicang and Longhai City.


Tong’an is a famous hometown of overseas Chinese and one of the main ancestral places of Taiwanese compatriots. There are more than 300,000 overseas Chinese and Taiwanese compatriots of Tong’an origin, and more than 100,000 returned overseas Chinese and their relatives. It is also a hometown of culture, gathering a galaxy of talents and giving birth to many politicians, thinkers, social activists and industrialists. For example, Su Song and Wu Tao in the Song Dynasty, Lin Xiyuan, Cai Fuyi and Hong Chaoxuan in the Ming Dynasty, Lin Junbi and Chen Huacheng in the Qing Dynasty, and Chen Jiageng in modern times. The ancestral homes of former Philippine President Corazon Aquino, Singapore’s former President Ong Teng Cheong and the wife of Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew are all in Tong’an.
