Commonly known as the ‘General’s Tomb’, the Ba Manzi Tomb is located next to the Lotus Pond in Qi Xing Gang, Yu Zhong District. The tomb, which is an arched stone cave, covers an area of approximately 20 square meters. Constructed from stone slabs, the tomb is hexagonal in shape with each edge about 1 meter high. The top is circular, sealed with a mixture of three types of gray mortar. On the front, there is a blue stone stele inscribed with the words ‘Tomb of General Manzi of the State of Ba in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty’, which is currently attributed to Dan Maoxin. Ba Manzi was a general of the State of Ba during the Warring States period over two thousand years ago. According to the ‘Huayang Guo Zhi · Ba Zhi’, at the end of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, General Manzi of Ba sought military assistance from the State of Chu to quell internal unrest, promising to give up three cities as a reward. After the unrest was settled, Manzi, unwilling to cede the cities, ‘beheaded himself and presented his head to the Chu envoy’, asking for an apology to the King of Chu. The King of Chu was moved and ‘buried his head with the rites of a senior official’, and the State of Ba also ‘buried his body with the rites of a senior official’. A poem praises his deeds: ‘The noble spirit hangs like the sun and moon, while the old city’s affairs are distant as mountains and rivers.’ The original construction date of Ba Manzi’s tomb is unknown, and it has been renovated through the ages. The existing Ba Manzi Tomb was rebuilt in 1922. Opening hours are from 8:00 to 17:00 all year round.
