White Emperor Mountain

White Emperor Mountain is located to the east of Fengjie County, Chongqing City, at the western entrance of Qutang Gorge. It is the starting point of the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River. The Three Gorges stretch for 193 kilometers from here to Nanjin Pass in Yichang. The banks on both sides are lined with sheer cliffs and precipices. There are rapids between shoals and gorges. White Emperor Mountain ‘guards Yanyu and controls Qutang Gorge’. Beside it is the outlet of Caotang River on the north bank of the Yangtze River. The terrain is extremely strategic and it has been a place contested by military strategists of all dynasties. Looking east from here, one can see Chicjia Mountain and Bailin Mountain, standing on the north and south banks respectively, steep and towering. The two mountains confront each other like two large doors. When the river surges forward and converges at the entrance of Qutang Gorge, one can see the surging waves crashing against the shore, stirring up whirlpools, breaking through the gates and flowing down for thousands of miles.

Opening hours: Open all day throughout the year.
