Baihuajian Grand Temple, located within the Tiantan Garden, is a temple with the largest single area in the province, also known as the Temple of the Nine Heavens Goddess. When it was inaugurated in October 1993, as many as 50,000 people from both domestic and international attended the consecration ceremony, an unprecedented event that marked it as a hot spot for tourism in Shantou.
The main deity of the temple is the Nine Heavens Goddess, also known as ‘Jiutian Xuannv’, a legendary ancient goddess with a human head and a bird’s body. She is said to be a disciple of the Holy Mother Yuanjun and a teacher of the Yellow Emperor, who was deified for assisting the Yellow Emperor in defeating Chi You and stabilizing the realm.

Mr. Liu Xiwang built the Baihuajian Temple in Kowloon, Hong Kong, to worship the goddess. He changed the name from ‘Baihua’ to ‘Baihuajian’ after dreaming that the goddess instructed him to do so. Mr. Chen Xiqian, when advocating for the construction of Tiantan Garden in Shantou, moved the incense of the Kowloon Temple to create the Temple of the Nine Heavens Goddess in Shi, hence it is called ‘Baihuajian Grand Temple’.
