Baili Gorge scenic area is located in Sanpo Town, Laishui County, Baoding City. It is to the west of the Shidu scenic area and approximately 150 kilometers away from downtown Beijing. It is an important attraction within the Yesanpo scenic area.
The scenic area is dominated by narrow and deep canyons. Visitors can view the spectacular and steep mountain terrain of the canyons and appreciate the streams and waterfalls within the valley. During the summer, the area is very cool, making it an excellent place for summer retreat and leisure.
Baili Gorge is divided into three canyons: Haitang Valley, Shi Xuan Gorge, and Scorpion Gully. Currently, Scorpion Gully is not yet developed. Haitang Valley and Shi Xuan Gorge are open for visitors. The two canyons form a loop, with Haitang Valley on the right and Shi Xuan Gorge on the left. The entrances to both canyons are located near Niu Jiao Peak, about 2 kilometers away from the scenic area entrance. There is a shuttle bus connecting the scenic area entrance to Niu Jiao Peak. It costs 10 yuan for a one-way trip and 18 yuan for a round trip.
Both canyons lead to the ‘Heavenly Ladder’ in their depths. It is a stone staircase with over 2800 steps. There are two halves on either side, with Tian Ting at the higher middle point. It takes about an hour to climb from either side of the ladder to Tian Ting. There are cable cars on both sides that lead up and down Tian Ting. It costs 50 yuan for a one-way trip and 90 yuan for a round trip on either side or a combined round trip on both sides.
Visitors to Baili Gorge usually take the big loop route. This means entering from one canyon and exiting from another. The entire route is about 8.5 kilometers long and takes about 4-5 hours. There is also an option to take a one-way or round trip cable car during the journey. If taking a one-way trip is chosen, it is recommended to take it downhill, as walking down the steep Heavenly Ladder is more strenuous than going up.
Visitors with limited time or physical strength can also take the small loop route. This involves only visiting one canyon, not taking the Heavenly Ladder, and returning the same way at the foot of the ladder. The small loop route is about 3 kilometers long and can be completed in about 1.5 hours. If taking the small loop route, it is recommended to choose the Haitang Valley route, as this canyon has relatively richer scenery.
Haitang Valley Canyon is an area where the scenery is more concentrated within the scenic area. The canyon is deep and narrow, with streams, deep pools, and waterfalls hanging on the rock walls, creating a beautiful environment. There are many attractions within the canyon, including Tiger’s Mouth, Refreshing Waterfall, One Thread Sky, Golden Thread Hanging Needle, Looking Back Guanyin, and Tiger Spring. Among them, the One Thread Sky is very narrow and deep, and very spectacular. Looking Back Guanyin is a naturally formed stone pillar that resembles a statue of Guanyin, which is also worth visiting. Additionally, every August, there are wild begonias in full bloom within the canyon, which visitors can come to see and take photos.
Shi Xuan Gorge is another canyon within the scenic area. It is named for the dozens of arc-shaped cliffs within the valley. The characteristic of this canyon lies in its many streams and waterfalls, as well as the peculiar arc-shaped cliffs. Making the walk through it fresh and quiet. There are attractions within the valley, such as Stretching Ox Lake, Water Curtain Cave, No Sky, Comforting Waterfall, and Strange Peaks. The unique landscape of ‘No Sky in Sight’ is formed by the arc-shaped cliffs on both sides, which is quite extraordinary.
In addition to the two canyons, there are also some scenic spots between the entrance of the scenic area and the canyon entrance at Niujiao Peak, such as Huarong Road and Luofeng Slope. These were filming locations for the 1992 TV series of ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’. Visitors can explore these spots thoroughly. The scenic area also features numerous filming locations for dramas like ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’, ‘Red Cliff’, ‘The Quest of Qin’, and ‘Xiao Shi Yi Lang’, which are worth seeking out. Moreover, during the summer, every evening at the entrance of the scenic area, there is a performance called ‘Impressions of Yesanpo’, which is very exciting. The ticket prices for the performance range from 90 to 280 yuan, and those interested can visit.
