Baili Island – A Hidden Gem with Military History and Natural Beauty

Baili Island, the second largest among the 146 islands of Zhuhai City, was originally one of the three major military bases in the South China Sea. For over fifty years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Baili Island has been a military restricted area with no civilian residence. The island boasts grand military facilities and an extensive network of underground caves, forming a formidable maritime fortress. In the early 1990s, after the military withdrew from the island, the facilities remained intact. By 1998, Baili Island gradually opened to the public.

As a continental shelf island, Baili Island possesses dual characteristics of marine and terrestrial landscapes. The island is perennially covered with green vegetation interspersed with exposed rocky areas. The mountains are composed of granite accumulations, with peculiar peaks, layered rocks, and rugged stones visible everywhere. The island is lush with vegetation, abundant in fresh water resources, and boasts excellent water quality, a fragrant environment, and a symphony of birdsong. It is home to numerous bays, with Putiwan and Shishiwan beaches known for their fine sand and clear waters, gentle slopes, and calm waves. The blue sky, azure sea, caves, strange rocks, cliffs, reefs, corals, beaches, gentle waves, and fresh air together form the unique natural and cultural landscape of Baili Island, a rare paradise on earth. The ancient Putiwan Tianhou Temple further showcases the island’s profound cultural heritage.

Additionally, there are over 200 species of fish with fishing value, 68 species of shellfish, 61 species of crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs, and 18 species of algae, making it an ideal place for military life experiences, leisure, vacationing, fishing, diving, surfing, rock climbing, and wilderness survival. On Baili Island, bamboo, rattan, and other plants, as well as wild fruits like oranges, bananas, pomelos, mangoes, and pineapples, grow abundantly, covering the mountains and plains. When the sea breeze blows, the forests resound. Wild boars, goats, wild cattle, and giant pythons are often spotted on the mountains, while the island’s shores are clear with schools of fish and shrimp, including a large number of ‘sesame spots’, ‘tiger spots’, ‘stone nine public’, and ‘mud hoppers’, making fishing here very rewarding and enjoyable.

With the opening up and expansion of tourism, Baili Island is set to become a popular destination for visitors to experience military life, enjoy natural scenery, and engage in hunting and fishing.
