Baitan Longtan is situated in the gorge between the southern and northern mountains, historically known as Shipeng Valley, also referred to as Longtan Gully. Water cascades from cliffs over twenty meters high, creating a stunning view of three pools and three waterfalls, known as the ‘Three Pools of Spilling Jade.’ The water spirals down along two water channels (gullies), plunging into the first pool, circling within it before falling into the second pool.

Bai Longtan typically refers to the first pool, which is urn-shaped and over ten feet deep. The second pool is also about ten feet deep, with a beach to the west. Overflowing water from the beach flows into the third pool. Bai Longtan is located a dozen miles from Miyun, passing through Gubeikou to Chengde along the ancient imperial road. Over several centuries from the Yuan to the Ming and Qing dynasties, Bai Longtan has seen the construction of numerous ancient buildings, thriving with incense and worship, reaching a considerable scale.

The golden age was during the Kangxi and Qianlong periods of the Qing Dynasty, with legends of four halls, eighteen pavilions, and a grand theater, all strategically and beautifully distributed throughout the Longtan Gully. The Bai Longtan Scenic Area hosts an annual traditional Longtan Temple Fair on the third day of the third lunar month, a Summer Cooling and Fishing Festival at Bai Longtan, an Autumn Red Leaves Festival, and organizes Blessing Tours at Wanfu Mountain and Rural Picking Tours.

The 800-acre scenic forest is lush and verdant, making it an ideal place for vacation and relaxation. The area is open all year round from 8:00 to 17:00.
