Baiyun Lake, located 20 kilometers northwest of Zhangqiu County in Jinan, is less than 10 kilometers away from Jinan International Airport to the west. Surrounded by clear waters and crisscrossing paths, numerous channels form a network. Over twenty natural villages are scattered around the lake area, truly embodying the charm of ‘Reeds block the path, seemingly no way through, with a touch of the bamboo pole, a new day comes into view. Laughter is heard but people unseen, deep in the cattails, there’s the sign of human life.’
Baiyun Lake Scenic Area is composed of Baiyun Lake Park, Water Park, and the Three-Dimensional Agricultural Sightseeing Garden. With its vast water area, it is one of the larger natural lake areas in Shandong. Baiyun Lake Park features thousands of acres of red lotuses and a statue of the Lotus Fairy. In the height of summer, after the rain, the water level rises, reeds and cattails glisten, lotus leaves reach for the sky, and lotus flowers reflect the sunlight. Other attractions include the Auspicious Bell, Water Park, and Bird Island, where visitors can tour by sightseeing vehicles or motorboats.
Not only is Baiyun Lake scenic, but it is also rich in aquatic products, being a large freshwater breeding area. The lake abounds with fish, turtles, shrimp, water chestnuts, lotuses, cattails, reeds, and over ten types of edible wild foods. Visitors can also indulge in a feast, as the poem says, ‘Fragrant rice, lush cattails, willows, and reeds, fish, turtles, shrimps, crabs, and river clams, all in abundance.’
