Baopu Taoist Temple is named after the Eastern Jin Dynasty Taoist patriarch Ge Hong, who once practiced alchemy here. It is located at the eastern foot of Gelin Peak, adjacent to the Gem Mountain in the east, Ziyun Cave in the west, West Lake in the south, and Huanglong Cave in the north. The temple stands majestically amidst lush mountains and is reflected in the lake’s waters.
From the banks of West Lake, as you approach the foot of Gelin Peak, the first structure you encounter is a yellow archway made of bricks and stones. Passing through the archway and climbing the steps, you soon arrive at the mountain gate of Baopu Taoist Temple. The outer wall of the temple follows the undulations of the mountain, resembling a moving yellow dragon, hence the name ‘Dragon Wall,’ which is one of the temple’s scenic spots.
The main hall of Baopu Taoist Temple is the Ge Xian Hall, which houses a statue of Ge Hong. To the east of Ge Xian Hall, there is the Red Plum Pavilion, a delicate and unique architectural structure, typical of southern courtyard-style ancient buildings. The wood-carved picture gallery inside the Red Plum Pavilion preserves dozens of calligraphic and painting works by celebrities from various dynasties. In recent years, a Yuanchen Hall has been built to the east of Ge Xian Hall, featuring statues of Taoist celebrities from different eras.
