Baoqing Temple is situated on the north bank of Qinglin Ferry by the Yaojiang River in Zhuangqiao, Ningbo City. According to local historical records: Baoqing Temple was originally built in the second year of Duan Gong during the Northern Song Dynasty (989 AD) by Zen Master Zongben, initially named ‘Xizi An’. During the Kaixi period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1205-1207), the temple monk Guangqing carried out large-scale expansion and petitioned the imperial court. In the fifteenth year of the Jiading era (1222 AD), Emperor Ningzong of Song bestowed the name ‘Baoqing Lecture Temple’ and invited the three-dynasty veteran, a great Confucian, and Minister of Rites Wang Yinglin to write the ‘Record of Baoqing Lecture Temple’. When the newly built Guanyin Hall was completed, another great Confucian Huang Zhen was invited to write the ‘Record of Baoqing Lecture Temple Guanyin Hall’, both of which were inscribed on stone tablets and erected in the temple. The reconstructed Mahavira Hall, with its imposing and solemn architecture, features a ‘singing cage top’ caisson ceiling, which is rare in Buddhist temples in Eastern Zhejiang. Inside the hall stands a jade Buddha, 3.8 meters in height, made of pure jade. The newly built Jade Buddha Hall, Ancestor Hall, Jialan Hall, relocated Dizang Hall, newly constructed mountain gate, bell and drum towers, release pond, and four antique-style wing rooms have added to the scale and grandeur of the Buddhist site, making it a remarkable spectacle in the forest of temples. The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the day’s opening conditions.
