Baotan Temple is located at the foot of Jin’ao Mountain in Cenqi, Rui’an City, Zhejiang Province. The temple is nestled against the mountains and faces the water, positioned northwest to southeast, approximately five kilometers away from the city center of Rui’an. In front of the temple lies the National Highway 104 and the Wen-Rui Canal. Initially constructed during the Yuanyou era of the Song Dynasty (1083-1093), the temple was founded by Zen Master Zhenxie Qingliao and local people from Rui’an. In the fourth year of the Yuan Dynasty’s Tai Ding period, Dingsyou (1327), Bhikkhus Liangtan and Bidar rebuilt the temple. During the twenty-fourth year of the Ming Dynasty’s Hongwu period, Xinwei (1391), the monk Bingwu restored the temple and renamed it Baotan Lecture Hall. During the reigns of Emperors Qianlong and Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty, the temple was known as Baotan Monastery. In 1934, the monk Xianpei renovated the mountain gate, and the bluestone tablet inscribed with ‘Baotan Zen Temple’ was written by Chi Zhichen.
