The Bawangling Forest Nature Reserve is home to a vast expanse of pristine tropical rainforests, montane rainforests, evergreen montane forests, and summit dwarf forests. It represents the fundamental forest and land types of Hainan’s tropical rainforests. The reserve is known for its species of trees such as Hainan cypress, Chinese arborvitae, and South Asian pine.

Among the fauna, there are more than 50 species across over 30 families, including the Hainan gibbon, sambar deer, clouded leopard, leopard cat, python, peacock pheasant, and white-necklaced pheasant. Seventeen species are under national protection, and 12 are provincially protected.
