Meinv Dam is located by the Qiantang River at the north of Meinv Mountain in Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou City. It is a T-shaped dam that extends straight into the river from south to north and is one of the ideal places to watch the Qiantang River tide. Meinv Dam and Yanguan Town in Haining City are good places to watch the Qiantang River tide. The main tide to be seen at Meinv Dam is the ‘turning tide’. The ‘turning tide’ refers to the rapidly advancing tide that forms when it encounters artificial obstacles such as dams. The turning tide seen at Meinv Dam is also called ‘Beauty’s Second Look Back’. According to legend, the little princess of the Qiantang River Dragon King was playing on Meinv Mountain and happened to fall in love at first sight with a fisherman from Wuli Village. The little princess decided on her own to betroth herself to the fisherman for life. This act angered the Dragon King, who then decided to flood Wuli. The princess and the fisherman decided to jump into the river to die for love. Unexpectedly, after they jumped into the river, they were unharmed. Standing on the floating stones of Zheshan Mountain and covered with thousands of rays of sunlight, they floated from the opposite bank towards Wuli. Later generations built a dam to block the river at the place where they landed and named it ‘Meinv Dam’. Open all year round and 24 hours a day.
