The Beijian Bridge is located in Xiaqiao Village, Sixi Town. It is named because it spans the Beixi River. It is known as ‘the most beautiful covered bridge in the world’. This bridge has a palace-style double-eaved roof, exquisite structure and simple shape. It was first built in the thirteenth year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1675). After being rebuilt six times, it still remains unchanged. The bridge is 51.07 meters long, 5.39 meters wide and 11.22 meters high. There are 20 bridge houses and 84 bridge pillars. The bridge deck is all reinforced by two layers of one-inch thick wooden boards. The east end of the bridge is called ‘bridge head’ by the locals. The terrain is relatively high, with 16 stone steps. The west end is called ‘bridge tail’. The terrain is relatively low and there are 26 stone steps. Passing through the long cobblestone road, one comes to the side of the Beijian Bridge. The two towering ancient trees standing at the bridge head set off the covered bridge and folk houses. The ridge beasts on the eaves of the covered bridge and the hanging fish on the mountain flowers of folk houses are faintly visible amid the swaying of branches and leaves. A path branches off from the side of the cobblestone road and extends to the other side of the stream via a small stone slab bridge. Looking at the Beijian Bridge with green tiles and red body on the wide stream beach is like being in an ancient Song Dynasty painting, and one can experience the beauty of people traveling in the painting! Open all year round, open all day.
